How Dimensional (DIM) Weight Works
Dimensional weight (also known as volumetric weight or cube weight) is a pricing technique used by commercial parcel carriers and airlines to account for the space a package occupies inside an aircraft cargo hold or delivery vehicle, rather than charging solely on physical scale weight.
A large box packed with lightweight contents (such as pillows or empty bottles) occupies substantial cargo space that could otherwise hold heavier revenue-generating freight. To prevent vehicles from reaching maximum volumetric capacity (cubing out) before reaching weight capacity (weighing out), carriers compare the package's actual gross weight against its calculated dimensional weight. The larger of the two values becomes the billable weight used for rating.
Imperial Dimensional Weight Formula
Standard US domestic commercial parcel divisor is 139 (FedEx, UPS Daily). Retail counter rates use 166.
Metric Volumetric Weight Formula
Standard international express divisor is 5,000 cm³/kg (DHL Express). IATA air freight planning uses 6,000 cm³/kg.
Carrier Divisors & Rounding Policies (2026 Service Guides)
While many shippers assume dimensional weight is calculated identically across all parcel networks, carriers enforce distinct dimension pre-rounding rules and divisors that substantially alter the final billable weight:
| Carrier / Service | Divisor | Dimension Pre-Rounding | Billable Weight Rounding | Official Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FedEx Express & FedEx Ground (US Domestic & Commercial) | 139 in³/lb | Nearest whole unit (fractions ≥ 0.5 round up, < 0.5 round down) | Next higher full pound (ceil) | FedEx Express and Ground Dimensional Weight Guide (opens in new tab) |
| UPS Daily Rates / Commercial Account Rates | 139 in³/lb | Each fraction rounds UP to next whole inch (e.g. 10.1" → 11") | Next higher full pound (ceil) | 2026 UPS U.S. Daily Rate and Service Guide (opens in new tab) |
| UPS Retail Rates (The UPS Store / Customer Counters) | 166 in³/lb | Each fraction rounds UP to next whole inch (e.g. 10.1" → 11") | Next higher full pound (ceil) | 2026 UPS U.S. Retail Rate and Service Guide (opens in new tab) |
| DHL Express Worldwide (Metric Standard) | 5,000 cm³/kg | Unspecified by published formula (exact decimal) | Unspecified by published formula (tariff increment) | DHL Express Volumetric Weight Guide & Calculator (opens in new tab) |
| DHL Express Worldwide (US Domestic/Imperial) | 139 in³/lb | Unspecified by published formula (exact decimal) | Unspecified by published formula (tariff increment) | DHL Express USA Tariff Guide - Imperial Volumetric Weight (opens in new tab) |
| International Air Freight (Resolution 502) | 6,000 cm³/kg | Nearest whole unit (fractions ≥ 0.5 round up, < 0.5 round down) | Next higher full or half unit (half-unit increment) | Cargo Services Conference (CSC) Resolution 502 (opens in new tab) |
UPS · UPS Retail Rates (The UPS Store / Customer Counters)
Under the 2026 UPS U.S. Retail Rate and Service Guide, divisor 166 in³/lb applies to UPS Retail Rates (The UPS Store / Customer Counters). Pre-rounding: Each fraction rounds UP to next whole inch (e.g. 10.1" → 11"); billable weight rounding: Next higher full pound (ceil).
IATA Resolution 502: Air Cargo Volumetric Weight
In international air freight forwarding, the baseline volumetric conversion is established by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Cargo Services Conference (CSC) Resolution 502:
Important Air Cargo Distinction: Cargo Services Conference (CSC) Resolution 502 provides the international baseline for chargeable weight calculation. It serves as a volumetric planning reference. Final commercial airline rating incorporates contract tariffs, fuel surcharges, security fees, terminal handling charges, minimum air waybill charges, and destination-specific tariff exceptions.
Step-by-Step Calculation Examples
Example 1: E-Commerce Carton on FedEx vs. UPS Daily Rates / Commercial Account Rates
Suppose you ship a carton with measured dimensions 18.4 in × 14.1 in × 12.2 in and an actual scale weight of 10.0 lb:
- Under FedEx Express & FedEx Ground (US Domestic & Commercial): Linear dimensions round to nearest whole inch → 18 in × 14 in × 12 in = 3,024 in³. Divided by 139 = 21.76 lb → rounds up to 22 lb billable weight.
- Under UPS Daily Rates / Commercial Account Rates: Linear dimensions each round UP to next whole inch → 19 in × 15 in × 13 in = 3,705 in³. Divided by 139 = 26.65 lb → rounds up to 27 lb billable weight.
- Result: Due solely to UPS dimension pre-rounding rules, the identical box is billed at 27 lb on UPS vs 22 lb on FedEx—a 5 lb billing discrepancy on the exact same physical package.
Example 2: International Air Freight Carton (IATA Air Cargo)
Suppose an export carton measures 60.4 cm × 40.2 cm × 35.6 cm with an actual scale weight of 11.0 kg:
- Linear dimensions round to nearest whole centimeter → 60 cm × 40 cm × 36 cm = 86,400 cm³.
- Volumetric weight = 86,400 / 6,000 = 14.40 kg.
- Weight rounding rounds up per tariff increment → 14.5 kg billable weight (governed by volume, +3.5 kg over scale weight).
How to Reduce Dimensional Weight Charges
Because dimensional weight increases cubically with linear dimensions (Length × Width × Height), small reductions in package size create disproportionate freight savings:
1. Carton Right-Sizing
Trimming just 1 inch from all three dimensions on an 18" × 14" × 12" carton reduces cubic volume from 3,024 in³ to 2,431 in³—eliminating 4.3 lb of billed DIM weight per carton.
2. Minimize Bulging & Overhang
Automated laser dimensioners scan the outermost edge. Overstuffed cartons with crowning or bulging tape increase scanned dimensions across the entire length, width, and height.
3. Negotiate Custom Divisors
High-volume shippers frequently negotiate contract divisors with carriers—such as 166, 194, or 250 in³/lb—to reduce or eliminate dimensional weight penalties on lightweight freight.
