1. Pallet Dimensions, Construction & Category-Specific Grades
Amazon US Fulfillment Centers enforce strict standards regarding pallet dimensions, materials, and structural integrity. Using unauthorized pallet sizes or damaged pallets will cause immediate dock rejection, freight rerouting fees, and non-compliance operational chargebacks.
General Merchandise
GMA Grade B+Applies to non-consumable goods (apparel, electronics, home goods, toys, hardware).
- Requirement: GMA Standard Grade B or higher.
- Condition: Must be clean, structurally sound, with no missing deckboards or broken stringers.
- Repairs: Companion (sister) stringers and repaired stringers are acceptable if structurally solid.
Grocery & Gourmet Food
GMA Grade 1A OnlyApplies to all edible food, beverage, and perishable grocery inventory.
- Requirement: GMA Grade 1A (or new equivalent) exclusively.
- Condition: No stringer repairs, companion stringers, or metal repair plates permitted.
- Hygiene: Completely clean, dry, odor-free pallets without contamination.
Health & Beauty
Grade 1A or 1BApplies to Health & Personal Care, cosmetics, skincare, and topical beauty items.
- Requirement: GMA Grade 1A or GMA Grade 1B.
- Key distinction: Unlike grocery, Grade 1B pallets with clean single-stringer repairs are permitted, but general Grade B merchandise pallets are not allowed.
- Preserve distinction: Do not flatten this category to generic "Grade A".
Pallet Construction & Material Standards
- 4-Way Access: Pallets must allow forklift and pallet jack entry from all four directions (4-way entry).
- Material & Condition: Pallets must be in good, structurally sound condition meeting the applicable GMA grade. Do not use pallets made of weak materials such as plastic, cardboard, or particle board. Qualifying GMA construction includes standard lumber, plywood, and approved composites.
- Integrity: Pallets must be free of broken stringers, missing deckboards, protruding fasteners, or severe damage.
2. Pallet Height Rules, Stacking Targets & Gross Weight Limits
Pallet height must always be measured from the warehouse floor to the highest point of the loaded cargo, including the wooden pallet base (approx. 4.75–5.0 inches). Amazon enforces clear tier limits depending on whether shipments are single-tiered, stackable, double-stacked, or clampable oversize units:
| Shipment Configuration | Height Limit (Imperial / Metric) | Pallet Base Included? | Operational Scope & Constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Single Pallet | 72 in max (182.8 cm) | Yes (from floor) | Standard non-stackable pallet maximum for general carton inventory in LTL and FTL. |
| Stackable Planning Target | ~50 in target (127 cm) | Yes (from floor) | Target pallet height for double-stacking in trailers for partnered-carrier logistics. |
| Double-Stacked Combined | 100 in max (254 cm) | Yes (both tiers total) | Maximum combined height when two pallets (e.g. two 50″ units) are stacked together in trailer freight. |
| Oversize / Clampable Exception | Up to 98 in (248.9 cm) | Yes (from floor) | Permitted exclusively for single indivisible oversize units or documented clampable truckload shipments. |
| Pallet Gross Weight Limit | 1,500 lbs max (680.3 kg) | Gross (cargo + pallet + wrap) | The total gross weight of a loaded pallet must not exceed 1,500 lb. Follow shipment-specific Seller Central instructions for any special handling requirements. |
Operational Note on Double-Stacking
Never double-stack pallets unless the cargo cartons and internal product packaging possess sufficient edge crush test (ECT) and compression resistance to safely support the upper tier without crushing, leaning, or creasing. If freight is non-stackable, clearly label all sides with "DO NOT DOUBLE STACK" handling cones or labels.
3. Pallet Overhang, Stretch Wrap Anchoring & 4-Sided Labeling
Unitized pallet freight must remain rigid, square, and easily scannable throughout cross-dock transfers and inbound receiving.
Zero Overhang Baseline
0″ OverhangCartons must sit flush with or slightly recessed from the pallet deckboards. No carton overhang is permitted beyond the 40 × 48″ perimeter.
Clear Stretch Wrap
Clear FilmWrap pallets in clear plastic stretch wrap and secure the load to the pallet so it does not shift during transit.
4-Side Pallet Labeling
4 LabelsEach pallet must have four (4) identical Amazon FBA Pallet Shipment ID labels affixed to the exterior of the stretch wrap—one placed on each of the four sides of the pallet.
4. Complete US Amazon FBA Inbound Rules & Verified Conditions
The complete, maintained FreeLoadPlan Amazon FBA ruleset (src/data/amazonFbaRules.ts), categorized by product scope and operational domain:
| Category | Product Scope | Rule Summary | Condition & Requirement | Documented Exceptions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pallet Material & Grade | All Categories (General) | Standard 40 × 48" GMA Wood Pallet with 4-Way Entry | Shipments to Amazon US fulfillment centers must be palletized on standard 40 × 48" (1016 × 1219 mm) 4-way access wooden pallets. | When a single large unit cannot fit on a 40 × 48" pallet without overhanging the edges, an appropriately sized pallet suitable for the unit may be used. |
| Pallet Material & Grade | All Categories (General) | GMA Standard Grade B or Higher for General Merchandise | General merchandise must be palletized on GMA Standard Grade B or higher pallets. Pallets must be clean, structurally sound, and free of broken stringers or missing deckboards. | Consumable and topical product categories require higher pallet grades (Grade 1A or 1B). |
| Pallet Material & Grade | Grocery (Food & Beverage) | GMA Grade 1A Only for Grocery Inventory | All products in the Grocery and Gourmet Food category must be delivered on GMA Grade 1A pallets only (or new equivalent). Pallets must have no companion stringers, sister stringer repairs, or splices. | None. Grade 1A is strictly enforced for food products. |
| Pallet Material & Grade | Health & Personal Care / Beauty | GMA Grade 1A or 1B for Health & Personal Care / Beauty | Health & Personal Care and Beauty items must be palletized on GMA Grade 1A or GMA Grade 1B pallets. Unlike grocery inventory, Grade 1B pallets are accepted, but Grade B general merchandise pallets are not permitted. | None. |
| Height & Stacking | All Categories (General) | Standard Maximum Height: 72 Inches Total (Including Pallet Base) | For standard single (non-stackable) pallet shipments, the maximum total height must not exceed 72 inches (182.8 cm), including the height of the wooden pallet base (approx. 4.75-5.0 inches). | Single indivisible units that inherently exceed 72 inches, or documented clampable truckload shipments meeting Amazon oversize criteria (up to 98 inches). |
| Height & Stacking | All Categories (General) | Stackable Pallet Target Height: Approximately 50 Inches | Pallets intended to be double-stacked in trailers for efficient partnered-carrier transportation should be built to approximately 50 inches total height per pallet (including pallet base). | Single non-stackable pallets can be built up to the standard 72-inch maximum. |
| Height & Stacking | Oversize / Single Units | Single Unit / Clampable Maximum Exception: Up to 98 Inches | When shipping a single large indivisible unit or clampable truckload freight adhering to Amazon documented handling requirements, the maximum pallet/load height is up to 98 inches. | Standard multi-box carton pallets must not exceed the standard 72-inch limit. |
| Height & Stacking | All Categories (General) | Double-Stacked Pallet Maximum Combined Height: Up to 100 Inches | When pallets are double-stacked for partnered-carrier trailer delivery (typically two 50-inch pallets stacked together), the combined total height of both tiers must not exceed 100 inches (254 cm). | Pallets may only be stacked if cargo cartons are structurally capable of bearing the top load safely without crushing or leaning. |
| Height & Stacking | All Categories (General) | Maximum Pallet Gross Weight: 1,500 lbs (680 kg) | The total gross weight of a loaded pallet must not exceed 1,500 lb. | Follow shipment-specific Seller Central instructions for any special heavy or oversize handling requirements; this guide does not assert a general exemption from the 1,500 lb pallet limit. |
| Overhang & Dimensions | All Categories (General) | Zero Overhang Baseline with Documented Single Large Unit Exception | Cartons must sit flush with the pallet deck boards; no carton overhang is permitted beyond the 40 × 48" pallet perimeter. | If a single large unit cannot fit on a standard 40 × 48" pallet without overhang, an appropriately sized larger pallet may be used to support the unit. |
| Stretch Wrap | All Categories (General) | Clear Plastic Stretch Wrap Anchored to Pallet Base | Pallets must be wrapped in clear plastic stretch wrap. The wrap must completely cover the cargo and extend down around the wooden pallet base to securely anchor the load. | None. |
| Labeling | All Categories (General) | Four (4) FBA Pallet Shipment ID Labels (One on Each Side) | Each pallet must have four (4) identical Amazon FBA Pallet Shipment ID labels affixed outside the stretch wrap, with one label placed on each of the four sides. | None. |
